Say what you like about Samsung - but they really do try everything. The Korean chaebol has produced smartphones and tablets to fit every size and shape, varying specifications and price points to find out what their next big hit will be. It's that kind of experimentation that led to the birth of the Note and the phablet, and now Samsung is looking into another form factor - truly giant smartphones that are only slightly smaller than a full size tablet.
According to SamMobile, the new series will be called Samsung Galaxy Mega, and will feature 5.8" and 6.3" models to start. There'll be no killer Galaxy Note 2 accessory, the S Pen, here. Nor will there be top-line specifications. Instead, these new smartphones will offer giant sizes at reasonable prices.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is the lower-spec of the two. The dual-SIM phone includes a low-resolution qHD display, literally four times lower a resolution than the 5" Galaxy S4. The phablet will measure 9.7 mm thick, again noticeably worse than Samsung's flagship.
Internally, power is similarly limited. There's a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front-facer. Connectivity is good, including Bluetooth 4, WiFi N and a-GPS. That puts the Mega 5.8 at a spec somewhere between the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy S3. Battery life is impressive though, at 2,600 mAh - no doubt a byproduct of the comfortably large chassis.
The Mega 6.3 is a more powerful and even larger smartphone. The resolution of its display is 1280 x 720, which isn't impressive but is much more palatable than that of its younger brother. The phone is powered by a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, 1.5 GB of RAM and includes the same cameras and connectivity options as the Mega 5.8, with the addition of LTE on some models. The Mega 6.3 also distinguishes itself in size, coming in at a Galaxy S4 equalling 7.9 mm thick. The phone is expected to be available in black from mid-May, and in white sometime later.
