NOKIA LUMIA 925

The Nokia Lumia 920 was a brilliant Windows Phone flagship, with just one problem: It was massive. At 10.7 mm thick and 185 grams in weight, the phone was much larger than its competitors, even Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 that boast much larger five-inch 1080p screens and octa-core processors.

The Lumia 925 aims to fix that problem with a new aluminium body that's just 8.5 mm thick and weighs 139 grams. That's a massive change from the earlier model, yet the Lumia 925 doesn't sacrifice anything in order to achieve the more desirable dimensions - except for wireless charging, which can be adding back in with a special wireless charging Lumia 925 cover.

The Lumia 925 includes the same PureView 8.7-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation that was included on the Lumia 920. That means you should see the exact same excellent low-light performance and steady videos. The 925 also includes a new Windows Phone app called Smart Cam, which offers a range of new automatic burst modes for you to choose from, that rival the choices available on the Galaxy S4 and other top-end Android phones. For example, there's a Best Shot mode for automatically selecting the most in-focus shot, Action Shot for making a composite of a moving subject and Motion Focus which adds motion blur to everything that isn't moving.

The hardware is also (almost) unchanged from the Lumia 920 - there's a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The only change has been an upgrade of the display from LCD to AMOLED - a move that should result in better, more energy efficient blacks at the slight cost of colour accuracy.

So to sum up, the Lumia 925 is a rare example of a phone that seems an upgrade in every meaningful area over its predecessor. While we could have seen a more revolutionary upgrade in Android land, in the heavily regimented area of Windows Phone this is as good as it gets.
